The project aims to reduce school’s energy use and improve the sustainability of their operations. In addition, it provides students with a valuable educational opportunity that will help them to develop a range of transferrable skills, increase their self-confidence and develop an awareness of environmental issues and the wide range of employment opportunities available within the ever expanding ‘green economy’.
We will be working with 10 schools across Powys during the period January 2017 – June 2019.
A student School Energy Management Team (SEMT) will be recruited who will lead the project work in each school. They will receive specialist training, carry out an energy survey of their school premises and report their findings to governors and senior management.
They will then lead an energy awareness campaign to encourage positive behaviour change among staff, students and the wider community.
Following the school-based work, the students will carry out a work placement with a local business during which they will repeat the survey and reporting process for the business premises where they are based. This provides them with a valuable opportunity to apply their newly-developed knowledge and skills to a work context whilst learning more about sustainability-related career opportunities.
They will also attend a ‘Your Green Future’ event where they will take part in a series of interactive workshops and visit an exhibitor hall, enabling them to interact with a range of sustainability-related businesses. This will further extend their awareness of the growing number of employment opportunities becoming available within the ‘green economy’.
This project is funded by The European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development: Europe investing in Rural Areas / Cronfa Amaethyddol Eqrop ar gyfer Datblygu Gwledif; Ewrop yn Buddsoddi mewn Ardaloedd Gwledig
I’m really looking forward to working with a new set of schools and students. I love seeing the dedication and enthusiasm they show and I’m sure it will be no different this time round. I hope that the students chosen will grow in confidence as the project progresses and start to see that they really do have the power to make a difference both locally and globally.
